Why This Decades-Old Skincare Line is Now Farming Hemp - Cannabis News

"My whole life lately seems to be about hemp," says Lily Morgan.

And for good reason: The founder of Colorado-based skin care company Lily Farm Fresh Skin Care has owned and operated eighty acres of farmland to supply her own production in Keenesburg, Colorado, for over thirty years.

Now nearly 90 percent of it is devoted to hemp.

Morgan, who also owns an additional 170-plus acres spread throughout the state, has been making cleansers, moisturizers, toners, lip balms and other products for her certified organic skin care line since 1986.

Rubbing cannabis on your face is the next big thing in Asia - Cannabis News

Although cannabis is mostly prohibited throughout the continent, cannabis and CBD beauty is being embraced as part of a thorough skincare regime in some East Asian countries.

Hemp-derived ingredients such as hempseed oil and cannabidiol (or CBD, a non-intoxicating cannabinoid) have been popping up at beauty counters all over the U.S. and Canada — although CBD topicals won’t be on shelves until the end of this year in Canada, as all cannabinoids are regulated).

Popular companies like NYX Cosmetics, the Body Shop, Origins and Kiehl’s are releasing products infused with cannabis. High-end retailers Sephora, Neiman Marcus, and Barneys also have skin in the cannabis beauty game — as does UK luxury spa Rudding Park.

The founder and creative director of Edie Parker now has handblown glass hash pipes shaped like peaches, grapes, and even a banana, which looks a little like… well… use your sophomore imagination.

“All the bongs and pipes are made in America by local artisans, and we tested them the good old-fashioned way,” says Heyman, who splits her time between New York City and Connecticut.

The Chanel of cannabis: founder of luxury marijuana brand Beboe on what fashion taught him about selling drugs - Cannabis News

The son of immigrants from Hong Kong, Clement Kwan created Beboe in California because he loves ‘the plant, the industry, and everything about it.’

A few years ago, Clement Kwan was in the awkward position of having to explain to his mother what he really did for a living.

He had just co-founded Beboe, a luxury cannabis brand, and figured he should come clean to his mother, who knew her son was some sort of entrepreneur.

“I said, ‘here’s the deal’, and then I told her not only about Beboe, but also that I grew and sold weed all through college to pay the tuition,” Kwan recalls. “Her reply was, ‘is it illegal?’ I told her it wasn’t, and she’s been fine with it.”

This fashion house is spinning off a cannabis brand, and its first collection is wild - Cannabis News

It’s the first high-end fashion brand that has entered the cannabis market, which is currently valued at around $6 billion, but is expected to reach $146.4 billion by 2024 as more states move to legalize it.

For years, cannabis was contraband. Supplies were kept hidden away in dark drawers, and bongs stored out of sight.

But now that states are quickly legalizing the plant, more people can display their weed openly.

This raises some important interior decorating questions.

The Taste, Feel, And Shimmer Of Women's Luxury Cannabis Products Show The Industry Is Growing Up - Cannabis News

As the cannabis market broadens to include the minivan segment of the population, luxury brands like Barneys are hoping to take up the mantle of cool in the cannabis space.

There’s been plenty of talk about how cannabis has gone mainstream.

With the majority of states legalizing some form of cannabis use and last year’s Farm Bill permitting industrial hemp growth in the U.S. again, cannabis advocates are now turning their attention towards the end of federal prohibition.

The fallout of cannabis transforming from the pinnacle of the counterculture to something over 6-in-10 Americans support legalizing presents a new problem for cannabis retailers.

Cannabis, fashion brand cross-pollination turns over a new leaf - Cannabis News

"What we’re most excited about is the branding landscape in cannabis.”

When it comes to luxury apparel brands tapping into the growing popularity of pot, there hasn’t been much movement beyond the enthusiastic embrace of the marijuana-leaf motif.

One need look no further than the diamond- and emerald-encrusted, 18-karat white-gold Happy Leaves necklace Bulgari introduced last year or the green gown from Viktor & Rolf’s spring and summer 2019 couture collection with the instantly recognizable seven-point cannabis sativa leaf emblazoned across the front.

Levi’s New Hemp Clothing Uses Less Water to Grow and Feels ‘Just Like Cotton’ - Cannabis News

The apparel industry is increasingly being scrutinized for its sustainability (or lack thereof), from raw materials use through manufacturing all the way to retail.

Levi Strauss & Co. has created a new line of clothing made with hemp that “feels just like cotton.”

Hemp requires far less water and land in the growing phase and has roughly half the carbon footprint of conventionally grown cotton but has not had wide adoption in the apparel industry because of its coarse feel.

Now, however, Levi’s has employed a process developed by fiber technology specialists that softens the hemp, giving it a look and feel that is “almost indistinguishable from cotton,” the company says.

Cannabis companies are taking cues, and employees, from the fashion industry - Cannabis News

Beyond treating weed as a wellness product, these businesses are drawing increasing comparisons to fashion ones, and that's no accident.

"The Hermès of Marijuana," read a 2017 headline in The New York Times Style section, referring to the brand Beboe, whose founders have also said that they aspire to become something akin to "the LVMH of cannabis."

Brands in cannabis are being likened to those in fashion and beauty with curious frequency.

'Cannabis beauty' is becoming a real category as Sephora, others promote CBD-infused products - Cannabis News

Cannabis beauty has become so trendy that Wall Street analysts have started treating it as a standalone category.

As beauty products laced with CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp and marijuana, continue to find their way onto the shelves of retailers including Sephora, Barneys and Neiman Marcus, analysts at Piper Jaffray are seeing further growth in this "beauty and the bong" industry.

The trend could help boost the overall CBD market, which Piper pegs at worth $50 billion to $100 billion on day.

Pot of gold: how the UK beauty industry fell for cannabis - Cannabis News

Cannabis has enjoyed an image overhaul of which most politicians could only dream.

Almost ten years ago, the drug was upgraded to Class B – yet today, bottles of cannabis-derived cannabidiol (CBD oil) can be bought in Holland & Barret for £19.99, with a few drops under the tongue being touted as a balm for insomnia, epilepsy and more.

CBD oil (as opposed to the THC found in cannabis, which remains illegal in the UK) is non-psychoactive – in other words, it won’t get you high.

Weed Fashion That Says ‘I Love Cannabis, But I’m Tasteful About It’ - Cannabis News

Weed has never been more fashion-forward than it is now. In addition to all the tacky tees with cheesy stoner slogans and pot-leaf-covered pants, there’s a growing amount of subtle, stylish articles of Mary Jane-friendly clothing that you’ll actually want to wear.

Even supermodels like Bella Hadid are adding weed to their closet if that’s any indication of how far weed fashion has come over the years.

On her Insta, there’s a recent photo of her sporting a high-end necklace with diamond and ruby-encrusted pot leaves.

Us regular folk can’t afford fancy jewels from Bulgari, but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for stereotypically cheap stoner apparel.

“Cannabis is America’s latest gold-rush,” says Alexia Inge, the co-founder of website Cult Beauty, which is known for spotting industry trends.

While the plant itself has been on the fringes of the beauty industry for some time, it’s the cannabis-derivative cannabidiol (or CBD) that is now getting all the hype.

As the legalisation of marijuana use in certain US states and discoveries about the medical benefits of the fabled green plant filter into the beauty industry, cannabidiol, which has no psychoactive effects, is about to hit the mainstream as the next miracle ingredient.

That particular segment is seen by analysts as one of the fastest growing — which got a major boost after California formally legalized recreational weed.

High fashion gets higher with designs celebrating cannabis - Cannabis News

The intersection of marijuana and fashion at one time meant tie-dye shirts, beanies and Birkenstocks.

And “stoner style” certainly hasn’t gone away, with no shortage of affordable T-shirts, leggings, flip-flops and more that help the masses wear their love for weed on their sleeves.

But as cannabis consumption becomes fashionable, the world of high fashion is also embracing the plant in subtle and bold ways.

“It’s like pairing beauty and bliss,” said Jacquie Achie, a Los Angeles-based fine jewelry designer best known for her line featuring delicate gold cannabis leafs. “Fashion and cannabis both inspire a unique sense of empowerment and confidence. Hemp Goes High Fashion With Bad Decision Adventure Club - Cannabis News

The hemp-based clothing line is thinking big.

When you think of hemp clothing, you usually conjure up images of hippie dippy tie-dye clothes. Scratchy and made of dull colors available at rock festivals or retailers that favor green causes.

Now hemp is going high fashion with emerging apparel brand Bad Decision Adventure Club (BDAC).

Usually, hemp is the fabric of choice for pro-marijuana types since the fiber is derived from plant cannabis sativa. Industrial varieties without the psychoactive properties have been grown since the 5th century B.C. when Phoenicians used hemp for sail cloth.
