Yeast fermentation may be the answer to creating rare cannabinoids - Cannabis News

A little genetic engineering, a lot of research, and a few metal tanks full of yeast bacteria could make mass-production possible.

From a purely chemical standpoint, a cannabinoid is a cannabinoid and a THC molecule is a THC molecule, no matter how it’s produced, whether in a lab or grown on a farm.

From a legal perspective, a cannabinoid is a cannabinoid -- at least in Canada.

Production and distribution of CBD is held to the same standards as the psychoactive compounds in cannabis.

Cannabis producers around the world are finding digital solutions, embracing automation in their operations to streamline workflows.

In 2019, the U.S. saw a steady surge in legal cannabis sales, reaching $12.4 billion -- a 37 percent increase year-over-year from 2018, where sales amounted to roughly $9.1 billion.

But this healthy trend was quickly curbed with the onset of the global pandemic this year, and the strict shelter-at-home directives that followed soon after.

With little time to adjust, cannabis producers and retailers were left to scramble as their operations came to a near halt.

With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) citing that epilepsy affects over 3.4 million Americans, identifying a key function in the disease’s ability to target certain parts of the body gives researchers key insight into understanding how and why epilepsy occurs.

In a new study published in the Annals of Neurology, researchers found that an autoantibody, which works against the body, seems to be responsible for causing epilepsy in some patients.

Study: American Weed Consumption Jumped 27% Last Year - Cannabis News

A new marketing report found that as cannabis continues to mainstream its way into American culture, more adults are using the herb than ever before.

The report is based on a survey from MRI Simmons, a marketing research firm.

One of the report’s most eye-opening insights is the increase in cannabis consumption over a one-year period. In 2018, only 16 percent of respondents said they used weed at least once that year.

But by 2019, that figure jumped to 22 percent, or just over 1 out of 5 adults, Marketing Charts reported.

Legalizing Marijuana Boosts Hotel Bookings As Cannabis Tourism Takes Off, Study Shows - Cannabis News

Colorado hotel room rentals increased considerably after the state began legal marijuana sales, a newly published study reveals. Washington State also saw increases in tourism after legalization, though the effect there was more modest.

The two states were the first in the U.S. to allow adult-use cannabis through laws approved by voters in 2012.

By comparing hotel room rentals in Colorado and Washington to states that did not change their legal status of marijuana from 2011 through 2015, researchers found that legalization coincided with a significant influx of tourists and a rise in hotel revenue.

Help wanted, no pot test required: New NYC law takes effect - Cannabis News

New York City has barred many employers from making job applicants get tested for marijuana use, under a law that took effect over the weekend.

It passed last year as the nation’s biggest city took a novel step in the evolving regulation of workplace policies about pot.

A few months later, Nevada passed a similar law — it says applicants can’t be turned down for failing a pot test — that went into effect Jan. 1. Unlike in Nevada, recreational pot is illegal in New York. Medicinal use is allowed.

And in Maine, which legalized cannabis in 2016 but still doesn’t have any adult-use retail shops open, people still said the law is more of a success than a failure by a greater than two-to-one plurality.

Israel approves medical cannabis exports - Cannabis News

Israel gave approval on Wednesday for exports of medical cannabis, paving the way for sales abroad that the government expects to produce hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Cohen gave final approval for the exports more than a year after the cabinet backed a new law to permit them. Cohen’s order takes effect in 30 days, allowing exporters to apply for a licence from the Health Ministry.

Missouri: Lawmakers seek to increase the number of medical marijuana licenses - Cannabis News

State lawmakers are pushing forward with a plan to dramatically increase the number of licenses to grow, process and sell medical marijuana in Missouri, months before dispensaries around the state are expected to open their doors.

Minor differences: Rules for underage medical marijuana patients - Cannabis News

In most medical use states, minors can get medical marijuana if they have an adult willing to act as their caregiver or designated provider and are also entered into the state medical marijuana database.

If you’re 21 years or older and live in one of the 33 states with legalized medical marijuana laws, you can access marijuana for medical reasons if you have a qualifying health condition.

And in 11 of these states, including Washington, recreational adult use is also legal, so you don’t even need to visit a doctor in order to purchase and consume cannabis products.

What is the best quantity for a dose of cannabis? - Cannabis News

As the demand for cannabis soars, so too does the need for clear guidelines governing its use. Cannabis is potent medicine, and as a medicine, requires a framework that minimizes harm.

Last year, my father was diagnosed with cancer that caused severe visceral pain. We knew weed could help. What we didn’t know was how much to give him.

The months that followed were shaped by trial and error -- sometimes we nailed it, and he experienced a few lucid, pain-free hours of relief, and other times, we got it horribly wrong, leaving him lethargic or anxious and confused.

Hemp advocates have identified lime-hemp building material, called "hempcrete," as an opportunity to build a market for hemp grown for fiber.

Challenges have been a lack of supply, building code regulations and a lack of education among architects and designers, builders say.

With the extract market burgeoning, there’s an increased focus on how those products are produced.

Solvent extraction methods have advanced quickly over the past few years, with popular solvents including ethanol, CO2, and hydrocarbons -- organic compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon atoms -- which in cannabis are usually butane and propane.

If you’ve used vape oil, edibles, or any number of products that incorporate extracts, you could well have been sampling the fruit of hydrocarbon extraction.

Pot Job Seekers Surge as Sector Is Still Hiring - Cannabis News

Unlike many industries, the cannabis sector is still hiring during the pandemic. Yet the number of open positions has dwindled as layoffs become more common and many of the jobs that do exist are temporary.

Vangst, which runs the Gigs site for temporary pot jobs and recently launched a platform for full-time positions, is filling about 600 jobs a week.

That’s a slight decrease from pre-Covid 19 levels earlier this year, mostly because companies are employing fewer in-store staff as they switch to delivery or curbside pickup.
